About us
Homes, not hospitals.
Includid began in 1997 so adults leaving long-stay psychiatric hospitals would have somewhere ordinary — and kind — to live.
Includid provides living, training and employment in Cape Town, for up to 75 adults with intellectual disabilities aged from 22 to 79. We operate 7 group homes in the grounds of Alexandra Hospital.
Many of our residents spent years in hospital wards. Many have little or no family left. Includid exists so they can share meals, tend a garden, go shopping, celebrate birthdays, and be known by name.
How we started
Includid was formed as a partnership of the Former Friends of Alexandra, the province’s psychiatric hospitals, and the provincial health department. The aim was de-institutionalisation with dignity: not a discharge into nothing, but a move into a household.

Our mission
Is to train, enable and empower individuals with intelectual disabilities so that they can take control of their own lives, develop to full potential and thus be enabled to live with support or independently in the community where their full human rights are respected.
Belonging
A house is not enough. Residents need friends, work, and a place that expects them in the morning.
Choice
Support is close by, but days still belong to the people who live here.
Contribution
The garden, the kitchen, and paid tasks are not extras. They are how adults take part in the world.
Partnership
Families, neighbours, the City, and donors keep the lights on. We cannot do this alone.
