Homes, not hospitals.
Includid began in 1997 so adults leaving long-stay psychiatric hospitals would have somewhere ordinary — and kind — to live.
We are a non-profit group-home organisation in Maitland, Cape Town. Our eight houses sit on the Alexandra Hospital grounds, close to Oude Molen, and are home to about 71 adults with intellectual disabilities.
Many of our residents spent years in hospital wards. Many have little or no family left. Includid exists so they can share meals, tend a garden, go shopping, celebrate birthdays, and be known by name.
How we started
Includid was formed as a partnership of the Former Friends of Alexandra, the province’s psychiatric hospitals, and the provincial health department. The aim was de-institutionalisation with dignity: not a discharge into nothing, but a move into a household.

Choice
Support is close by, but days still belong to the people who live here.
Contribution
The garden, the kitchen, and paid tasks are not extras. They are how adults take part in the world.
Partnership
Families, neighbours, the City, and donors keep the lights on. We cannot do this alone.
